South koreaSOUTH KOREA

South Korea has now made five contributions to NSOI-identified projects in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).  In 2007, South Korea provided funding through DOE’s Global Threat Reduction Initiative to move into secure storage highly radioactive materials from a Ukrainian facility that could not pay for safe disposal of this material.

Through DOE's Second Line of Defense (SLD) program, South Korea has provided funding for several important anti-nuclear smuggling projects.  In 2008, South Korea provided funding for equipment at a Ukrainian border post.  South Korean assistance supplied an airport in Kazakhstan with radiation detection equipment in 2009.  In 2010, South Korea contributed towards equipping a port along Ukraine’s Izmail River.  South Korea also contributed funds towards equipping border posts with radiation detection equipment in Ukraine and in Kazakhstan in 2011.

NOTE: This page describes only those assistance efforts that correspond to projects developed by NSOI. For a comprehensive description of each country’s or organization’s full program of anti-nuclear smuggling assistance, please contact that government or organization.
