SWEDEN

Sweden is providing assistance to the Government of Ukraine to improve its maritime interdiction and detection capabilities in the Black Sea. This assistance involves provision of radiation detection equipment for several ships that patrol the Black Sea. Furthermore, Sweden is providing assistance to maintain security improvements at the Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology to reduce the risk of theft of nuclear material from this facility.

In Georgia, Sweden has agreed to provide temporary salary support for the staff at the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Service's office in the Black Sea port of Poti, which will greatly enhance the Government of Georgia's ability to respond to nuclear smuggling incidents in the western part of the country. Sweden has provided physical security upgrades and training support to the Institute of Physics. Sweden has also pledged to support the development and operation of central calibration center for radiation detection equipment, pending a formal decision of the Government of Georgia to designate a sole agency in charge of the facility.

NOTE: This page describes only those assistance efforts that correspond to projects developed by NSOI. For a comprehensive description of each country’s or organization’s full program of anti-nuclear smuggling assistance, please contact that government or organization.
