DETAILS OF ASSISTANCE BEING PROVIDED TO NSOI-DEVELOPED PROJECTS
UNITED KINGDOM
The United Kingdom has agreed to provide assistance to the Government of Ukraine for design and construction of a new, long-term storage facility for disused radioactive sources. This facility will replace the six regional Radons that currently store such sources, providing a single, central facility where disused sources can be stored safely and securely.
The United Kingdom has also agreed to assist the Government of Tajikistan in upgrading security at the radioactive source storage facility at Fayzabad. If the United Kingdom’s assessment of the facility determines that additional capacity is needed, the United Kingdom will also provide support for construction of a second storage building there.
In Georgia, the United Kingdom plans to support physical security upgrades at the Saakadze waste disposal facility and fund further search-and-secure operations to recover disused and orphan radioactive sources on Georgian territory. The United Kingdom is also considering funding an amnesty and public awareness campaign designed to encourage the safe transfer of undiscovered radioactive sources into secure storage.
NOTE: This page describes only those assistance efforts that correspond to projects developed by NSOI.
